Hello! I know it’s been awhile. I just couldn’t get to my blog or content last week because of family stuff so I decided to give myself the break :). However, all that aside, I did something I’ve never done before: I deactivated my Instagram notifications. Maybe it was the impact of watching The Social Dilemma or the fact that seeing an Instagram notification made me want to throw my phone across the room; but deactivating my notifications was a wonderful decision for me, and I recommend everyone do so. And here’s why.
The biggest takeaway out of deactivating Instagram notifications is getting my peace of mind. Because of the blog, I’m on my phone a lot, and of course I’m on Instagram as well. However, whenever a notification popped up, I felt the need to check it ASAP. As a result, I would get distracted from the existing task I was doing, get irritated with my phone flashing notifications, and then get caught up in the in the Instagram world. So lack of notifications took that anxiety away.
Additionally, it allowed me to check Instagram whenever I wanted rather than being driven my notifications and playing catch up. Therefore, I am able to manage my time better and designate time slots for when to spend time on Instagram vs. when to stay away from it.
I am aware that phone notifications have their place. In fact, I have my news apps’ notifications on so I get a snapshot of the daily headlines without reading articles or watching the news. However, when it comes social media, even as a blogger we can get lost in that space and lose track of time. Therefore, if you find yourself getting distracted by notifications and losing time thanks to social media, try deactivating the social notifications for a couple days or so and see what happens. If you don’t like it, then you can simply reactivate them again :).
This is so needed thanks for sharing this

Thanks for reading Archana!
I do this once a month and just stay off of social media. It really does bring peace of mind and I feel so much better afterwards

This is so insightful. I definitely get lost in the Insta sphere due to notifications. Glad your “experiment” worked!
