5 Hairstyles to try on Natural Hair

It is already the end of March, which means that it’s getting super warm here in India. So all the Winter clothes have gone away and it’s time to bring out the Spring and Summer looks. With India’s intense heat, heat styling of any kind on my hair is useless. One sweats so much that everything gets undone. I personally have experienced that my freshly straightened hair or freshly curled hair goes totally drab within an a couple of hours thanks to the perpetual sweat. So for the summer and monsoon months, I’ve come up with some easy hairstyles to do with our natural hair.

My hair is naturally thick and wavy. If I wash it and let it air dry without any styling products, then it has to be braided in some way. However, if I wish to leave it down, I’ll put in some styling products. So the hairstyle suggestions below are discoveries I’ve made following the Wavy Girl Method, and each style is in order from the day of shampoo. So first things first, hair is washed and conditioned with Curly/Wavy Girl Shampoo, then waves are defined with a curling cream, held in place with gel, and given that light bounciness with a mousse. For more on my Wavy Girl Method-check out this blog post. With so much product in the hair, it’s best to let it last as many days as it can right?? So check out the hairstyles below!

Day 1 (Wash Day)-Open Hair with a Headband-My hair is freshly styled and lookin’ fly, so I’m leaving it down, and putting a fun headband on. I’ve been loving the knotted headbands lately.

Day 2: Half up/down-My hair needs a quick refresh with some water spritzing and mousse, and it’s good to go again. I love putting in a butterfly clip and flaunting my natural waves.

Day 3: Braid- Now the hair is getting stiff with product, but it’s still workable- I love doing a defined, chunky braid-and thanks to all the product, it does’t move!

Day 4: Messy bun-This is my most recent addition to my hairstyles, and I love it. Normally messy buns are created by first adding curls or waves to the hair, pinning them up and then adding a whole bunch of hairspray to make it all stay. But with Day 4 non washed hair with styling products in the hair, I got the waves, I got the grit, so I just need a little bit of hair serum, and I pin my hair up into a messy bun. It’s big, gorgeous and I’m good to go in 10 minutes.

Day 5: Top Knot-I love this hairstyle. I added to my hairstyles during the first lockdown, and I haven’t looked back since. Check out a demo right here. Now the hair has even more grit, so I’m able to create a really sleek, twisted top knot that looks super neat and gets me through the day before washing it.

So those are my go-to hairstyles for my natural hair. Through these discoveries, I actually fell back in love with my natural waves and I’m here for them. I’ve also learned that rather than fighting the hair and weather battle, we might as well just go for it and look cute in the process. So which one of these would you be willing to try??

This is helpful for lazy people like me- haha. I’m always looking for fun ways to spice up my hair. I haven’t done the messy bun yet but I would love to try that out.
